How Much Does Vocal Tuning Cost in 2026? Per Track vs Per Song

Vocal tuning prices in 2026: $20 marketplace gigs, £90 per track at Abbey Road, $100/hour pros, or €99 Melodyne DIY. What each tier covers and what to pay.

Horia Stan is a music producer and sound engineer at The One Records in Bucharest, Romania. He edits and tunes vocals as a regular part of his production and mixing work for artists worldwide.

Professional vocal tuning costs anywhere from about $20 per track on freelance marketplaces to £90 per vocal track at Abbey Road. Some experienced engineers bill $100 an hour. The number on the listing matters less than how the price is counted: per track, per song or per hour. A modern pop vocal is rarely one track, and per-track pricing multiplies fast.

Quick answer

  • Marketplace freelancers: roughly $20 to $75 per track or per song on platforms like AirGigs. Read exactly what "track" means in each listing.
  • Established studios and engineers: Abbey Road lists £90 per vocal track on top of its online mixing fee. Some experienced engineers bill $100 an hour and average about $500 per song.
  • Doing it yourself: Melodyne starts at €99 for the basic edition. The software is cheap. The hours you spend are the real cost.
  • Per song vs per track: a stacked pop vocal can have 10 or more tracks. If the vocal is layered, a per-song price that includes tuning in the mix is usually cheaper and simpler.

What vocal tuning actually includes

"Vocal tuning" gets used as a catch-all. Before you compare prices, know which of these jobs you are paying for. A cheap quote often covers only the first one.

TaskWhat it meansUsually included in a cheap tuning gig?
Pitch correctionFixing notes that are sharp or flat, by hand or automaticallyYes
Timing correctionMoving syllables onto the grid or the grooveSometimes
CompingPicking the best phrases from several takes into one performanceRarely
Doubles alignmentMatching doubles and harmonies to the lead in time and pitchRarely, often billed per track
CleanupBreaths, clicks, mouth noise, bleedSometimes
Pitch drift and vibrato shapingShaping the note between attack and release, not just its centerOnly with careful manual work

A gig that runs the vocal through automatic correction and sends it back is a different job from hand-editing every phrase in Melodyne. Both get called "vocal tuning", and they should not cost the same.

Vocal tuning prices in 2026, tier by tier

Tier 1: marketplace freelancers

AirGigs has a wide spread of vocal tuning listings. A few real examples:

These can be fine for a demo or a single dry lead vocal. Read the scope closely, though. "Per track" can mean one vocal track or one song, depending on who wrote the listing. I covered the trade-offs between marketplaces and hiring an engineer directly in Fiverr vs SoundBetter vs hiring a mixing engineer directly.

Tier 2: established studios

Abbey Road runs an online tuning service tied to its online mixing. Its help page states that vocal tuning is charged at £90 per vocal track, on top of the online mixing charge. You upload WAVs to the online mixing page and choose which tracks need tuning.

The point to notice is "per vocal track". On a lead vocal alone, that is £90. On a full stack, it is a lot more.

Tier 3: experienced independent engineers

Experienced engineers often bill by time. One engineer on SoundBetter states $100 an hour for vocal tuning, with a listed average of about $500 per track. He says that average is only a ballpark and that tuning goes faster when the artist sends a comped vocal.

That last point is worth remembering whoever you hire. When you pay by time, your preparation changes the bill.

Tier 4: doing it yourself

The software costs less than one pro tuning job. Celemony's web shop lists Melodyne 5 from €99 for essential up to €699 suggested retail for studio. Auto-Tune has its own perpetual and subscription options. If you are choosing between the two, read Melodyne vs Auto-Tune 2026 first.

DIY makes sense if you already edit, the vocal is mostly in tune, and you only need light correction. It makes less sense if you are learning on your release. Careful manual tuning of a layered pop vocal takes skill and hours, and being the singer makes it harder to hear your own pitch honestly.

Why per-track pricing gets expensive on pop vocals

This is where most artists get surprised.

A modern pop or dark pop vocal is a stack: one comped lead, two or more doubles, harmonies above and below, ad-libs, maybe a whisper layer in the chorus. Here is a simple example with 8 vocal tracks:

Vocal trackCount
Lead (comped)1
Doubles2
Harmonies3
Ad-libs1
Whisper or texture layer1
Total8

At £90 per vocal track, tuning alone comes to £720 before mixing starts. At $20 per track, it is $160. The cheap version looks great until you hear the doubles drifting away from the lead because nobody aligned them. That is a separate job, and many listings do not include it.

TIP
Before you accept any tuning quote, ask three questions in writing: does "track" mean one vocal track or one song, are doubles and harmonies aligned to the lead or only tuned, and is comping included or do I need to send a comped vocal.

That stack is exactly what the polished pop vocal sound is made of: precise pitch, tight doubles, layered harmonies. I broke down how that sound is built in How the Polished Romanian Pop Vocal Sound Is Made. If the stack is where your song's character lives, buying tuning by the track and mixing separately often costs more and sounds less coherent than one person doing both.

Per song or per track: which pricing model to pick

Per track works when:

  • You have one lead vocal and maybe one double.
  • The vocal is already comped and mostly in tune.
  • Someone else is mixing and only needs clean, corrected vocals.

Per song works better when:

  • The vocal is stacked and the harmonies matter.
  • The doubles need alignment, not just tuning.
  • You want the same person to decide how tight the vocal should be and then mix it. Tuning choices and mix choices affect each other. How hard a vocal is tuned changes how it sits against reverb, saturation and the instrumental.

Per hour works when:

  • The engineer is experienced and you trust their pace.
  • You can prepare the session well, since preparation directly lowers the bill.

This is the same logic I use for the full mix fee in How Much Does Mixing and Mastering Cost in 2026. Ask what the price includes before you compare it.

How I price vocal editing

I do not sell tuning by the vocal track. On my projects, vocal editing and tuning are part of the job: comping, pitch correction, timing, doubles alignment and harmony cleanup, done by the same person who mixes. Tight pitch correction, aligned doubles and layered harmonies are a daily part of my vocal work. If the song needs a more natural, live feel, I edit less and keep the performance in front.

Projects start at €500 per song, and the final price depends on scope and complexity. Average turnaround is 2-3 days per song, depending on genre, track count and how many vocal takes need editing. Two revision rounds are included. I work fully async and in writing with artists in Latin America, the US, the UK and Europe, with vocals in English, Spanish, Portuguese or Romanian. I do not need to speak the language. A lyric sheet is enough for tuning and timing decisions. The details are on the mixing and mastering page.

How to lower your tuning bill, whoever you hire

These cost nothing and save time on any quote:

  1. Comp before you send, or say clearly that you didn't. Sending ten full takes and asking someone to "pick the best" is a different job from tuning one finished performance.
  2. Name and label every vocal track. "Lead", "Double L", "Harmony high", not "Audio 14".
  3. Export consolidated WAVs that all start at bar one, 24-bit, with the BPM and key written down.
  4. Send the vocals dry. If an effect is part of the sound, print it on a separate track.
  5. Send one or two references for how tight the tuning should be. "Natural" and "polished" mean different things to different people.
  6. Mark the spots you know are wrong. Timestamps in a text file save a lot of guessing.

When to tune it yourself and when to hand it off

Do it yourself when the vocal is mostly in tune, there are only a few layers, you already know Melodyne or Auto-Tune, and the release is a demo or a sketch. A €99 license and an afternoon is the right spend there.

Hand it off when the vocal is stacked, the song depends on tight doubles and harmonies, you are releasing it properly, or you have listened to your own edit so many times you can no longer tell if it is right. In that case, pay for the whole vocal job instead of a per-track tuning pass.

If that is where your song is, send your stems, references and deadline through the project form. Scope and price are agreed in writing before work starts. If you want to vet engineers first, use my 12 questions to ask before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to get vocals professionally tuned?

Listed prices run from about $20 per track on AirGigs to £90 per vocal track at Abbey Road. Some experienced engineers bill $100 an hour, which averages around $500 per song. The final cost depends on whether the price is counted per vocal track, per song or per hour, and on how many layers your vocal has.

Is vocal tuning included in mixing?

Sometimes. Some studios bill tuning separately per vocal track. Abbey Road, for example, adds £90 per vocal track on top of its online mixing charge. Other engineers include vocal editing in a per-song mix price. Always ask in writing whether tuning, comping and doubles alignment are included before you compare mixing quotes.

Why is vocal tuning priced per track?

Each vocal track is a separate performance that has to be edited note by note, so per-track pricing roughly follows the workload. The catch is that pop vocals are often stacks of 8 or more tracks, so a low per-track rate can add up to more than a per-song price that covers the whole vocal.

Should I tune my own vocals or pay someone?

Tune them yourself if the performance is mostly in tune, you only have a few layers, and you already know an editor like Melodyne, which starts at €99. Pay someone if the vocal is heavily stacked, the release matters, or you can no longer judge your own pitch objectively after many listens.

What is the difference between vocal tuning and vocal editing?

Vocal tuning usually means pitch correction only. Vocal editing is broader: comping the best takes, fixing timing, aligning doubles and harmonies to the lead, and cleaning breaths and noises. Cheap tuning gigs often cover pitch alone, so check the scope before you pay.

How long does professional vocal tuning take?

Marketplace listings often quote a few days. One AirGigs listing states a 4-day turnaround. An engineer billing hourly may need anywhere from under an hour for a clean lead to several hours for a full stack. On my projects, a full song including vocal editing and the mix averages 2-3 days.

How can I make vocal tuning cheaper?

Send a comped vocal instead of raw takes, label every track clearly, export dry 24-bit WAVs that all start at bar one, include the BPM and key, and mark known problem spots with timestamps. Less guesswork means fewer hours, and that matters most when you are paying by time.
