Suno + Logic Pro: A Real Producer's Hybrid Workflow Experiment
I used Suno to generate a song starting point, then finished it in Logic Pro 12. Here's the full workflow, what worked, what broke, and whether this is the future of production.
I ran an experiment over a weekend in March: could I take a Suno-generated track, pull it into Logic Pro 12, and finish it as a real, shippable song? Not as a gimmick. As a legitimate production workflow.
Full disclosure upfront: this is not "AI replaces producer." This is "producer uses AI as another tool in the chain." Those are different experiments. The second one is where real value lives.
Here's the documented step-by-step. What went well, what broke, and whether I'll use this flow again.
Why this experiment matters
Most Suno-vs-producer content online is either breathless hype ("AI will replace you!") or defensive dismissal ("AI is a toy, real producers still win"). Both miss the point. The actual question is: can AI be a useful starting point in a workflow that still ends with human decisions?
If yes, every producer should be using it.
If no, it's worth knowing why.
The setup
Tools:
- Suno v5.5 (Pro tier, for commercial rights)
- Logic Pro 12.0.1 on M3 Pro Mac
- Audio-Technica AT2020 for vocal overdubs
- Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 interface
Goal:
Generate a dark pop starting point in Suno, extract stems via Udio inpainting workflow (Suno doesn't give clean stems directly), reconstruct in Logic, add live elements, re-produce, mix.
Time budget: 6 hours across 2 days.
Step 1: Generating the starting point in Suno
Prompt used:
Dark pop, 90 BPM, female vocal, sparse arrangement, sub bass-heavy, textural percussion, minor key, melancholy but not depressing, Billie Eilish reference energy, no chorus repetition, 2 minutes.
Suno generated 4 variations. The third one was usable - clean vocal, arrangement breathed enough that I could work with it, BPM was tight and consistent.
Time spent: 8 minutes (prompt iteration + listening to outputs)
What worked: the genre fit was accurate. Suno understood "dark pop" well enough to produce something recognizably in the right aesthetic space.
What didn't: the vocal melody was derivative. It sounded like 5 different Billie Eilish songs composited together. I knew I'd need to replace the vocal line eventually.
Step 2: Pulling stems
Suno doesn't export clean stems in the Pro tier, so I had to use Udio's inpainting editor or a stem separation tool. Options:
- Udio inpainting: if you can get the Suno audio into Udio, the inpainting editor lets you isolate and regenerate sections. But Udio works best with its own generations.
- Logic Pro 12's Stem Splitter: the practical option. Pulled vocals, drums, bass, and "other" (synths, pads, etc.) in one step.
I used Logic's Stem Splitter. Results:
- Vocal stem: clean, ~90% isolation quality. Usable.
- Drum stem: decent. Some bleed from bass and synths.
- Bass stem: weak. Dark pop often has the sub-bass woven into the arrangement in ways that confuse stem separators.
- Other stem: a mess. Synths, pads, textures all smeared together. I'd need to rebuild these from scratch.
Time spent: 15 minutes (splitting + listening to each stem)
Verdict: workable. Vocals isolated well, drums usable, but bass and synths would need to be replaced.
Step 3: Reconstructing in Logic Pro 12
This is where the real production work started. Loaded the stems into Logic, started rebuilding.
What I kept from Suno:
- The vocal stem (as a starting reference)
- The drum pattern (but replaced the samples with my own)
- The overall tempo and key
- The general arrangement skeleton (intro, verse 1, verse 2, bridge, outro)
What I replaced:
- Every synth/pad part (rebuilt from scratch using Logic's Synth Player + Alchemy)
- The bass (new sub-bass patch designed specifically for the song)
- The drums (same rhythm but new samples - Suno's drums sounded library-y)
What I added:
- A second vocal layer (whispered harmony, recorded with AT2020)
- A field recording of rain as textural percussion (my own)
- A guitar motif in the bridge (tracked myself)
Time spent: 3 hours
By the end of step 3, maybe 30% of the audible elements were from Suno. The rest was my own production. But the starting point - the arrangement structure, the emotional direction, the BPM and key - all came from the AI generation. That saved me probably 90 minutes of "staring at an empty DAW trying to decide what this song wants to be."
Step 4: Replacing the vocal melody
This was non-negotiable. Suno's vocal was competent but derivative. For a shippable song, I needed an original vocal.
Options:
- Rewrite the melody myself, track it with my own voice (I'm not a vocalist, so limited use).
- Send the Suno reference to a vocalist and ask them to write their own melody over the production.
- Use the Suno vocal as reference, then vocoder it into an original part.
I chose option 2 for this experiment. Sent the instrumental to a collaborator, they wrote a new vocal melody that fit the arrangement, tracked it on her end, sent me stems.
Time spent: ~2 hours (vocal tracking + editing + comping)
This is the crucial step. Without a human-original vocal, the track would be a Suno remix, not a real song. The AI-generated vocal existed only as a sketch to show the vocalist what the arrangement sounded like.
Step 5: Mix and master
Logic Pro 12's Mastering Assistant handled the initial master reference. I refined manually from there:
- Mix pass: 90 minutes
- Master pass: 30 minutes
Target: -14 LUFS integrated, -2 dBTP. Landed on -14.2 LUFS. Standard streaming mastering target.
Time spent: 2 hours
The final result
A ~3-minute dark pop track with:
- 90% human-produced audio (my synths, drums, bass, effects, vocal automation)
- 10% AI-informed structure (tempo, key, arrangement skeleton from Suno)
- 100% human-performed vocals
- 100% human-made final mix and master decisions
Indistinguishable from a track produced without Suno in the chain - because functionally, Suno contributed structure, not sound. Every audible element was either played, sampled, or designed by a human.
Time comparison
- Traditional workflow (no AI): starting from empty session, typical dark pop production takes me ~14-18 hours from concept to master.
- Suno + Logic workflow: same quality output, ~7 hours total.
Savings: ~50% of time to a first draft. Mostly on the "what should this song be" phase, which normally eats 3-4 hours of noodling before committing to a direction.
What went well
- Starting point acceleration: Suno solved the "blank canvas" problem. I had an arrangement to react to instead of an arrangement to invent.
- Logic Pro 12's Stem Splitter is now good enough to be a legitimate bridge between AI generation and traditional production.
- Synth Player on Logic filled in placeholders that I later replaced with real synth programming. Same function: give me something to react to.
- The chord progression was correct. Suno picked chords that worked. Minor thirds, a borrowed IV chord in the bridge. Nothing a human wouldn't have picked, but it saved me the time of picking.
What broke or went wrong
- Bass stem was unusable. Stem Splitter couldn't isolate sub-bass from the synth layer cleanly. Had to replace from scratch. Not a dealbreaker but expected-ish.
- The original Suno vocal was a dead end. Derivative, trope-y, not something an artist would sing. Required full replacement, which I knew going in.
- Suno v5.5's "no chorus repetition" instruction wasn't followed. The generation had a very clear chorus-verse-chorus structure even though I'd asked for non-traditional form. Had to rework the arrangement.
- Creative ownership felt weird at first. Knowing that the starting structure came from AI made me more critical than usual. Made me want to change more than I needed to just to assert human authorship. I had to consciously push past that to make production decisions for musical reasons, not ego reasons.
Would I do this again?
For the right project, yes.
When this workflow wins:
- Producing demo-stage tracks where speed matters more than bespoke creativity
- Exploring unfamiliar genres (Suno can teach you the conventions of a space you don't know)
- Breaking through creative blocks when you can't decide what a song should be
- Client work with tight deadlines where the artist just needs a working production framework
When this workflow loses:
- Flagship releases where every element needs bespoke care
- Signature production work where your creative voice is the selling point
- Commissioned work where clients might care about AI involvement (disclose always)
Ethical notes
- Commercial rights: Suno's Pro tier grants commercial distribution rights on generations. Read the current terms before releasing. They've updated multiple times.
- Disclosure: I believe in disclosing AI involvement, even for hybrid workflows. The listener can decide if they care.
- Collaborator consent: the vocalist knew the instrumental originated from Suno. She chose to work on it anyway. If I hadn't disclosed, that would be a problem.
- Artist credits: for the final release (if I release this), the artist is credited normally. Suno isn't credited as a co-writer. It was a tool.
Is this the future of production?
Yes, for the "ideation + sketch" phase. Not for the creative final mile.
I expect within 18-24 months, most professional producers will be using AI tools somewhere in their workflow, usually at the starting point. The producers who pretend this isn't happening will lose time to producers who adopted the tools.
What won't change: the decisions that make a song feel like something rather than anything. Those will still come from humans. At least for now. At least for the listeners who care.

The free Suno tier doesn't grant commercial rights, so any output is for personal/educational use only. For a real release workflow, you need the Pro tier. About $30/month depending on current pricing.
Which DAW handles AI stems best?
Logic Pro 12 with the improved Stem Splitter is the smoothest native option. Third-party alternatives like Demucs, Moises.ai, or iZotope RX 11 can give marginally cleaner separation but require extra workflow steps.
How do I disclose AI in my production?
Depends on the context. For distribution, some platforms now require you to flag AI content in metadata (Spotify, Apple Music). For credits, standard practice is to credit yourself as producer and note AI tool use in liner notes or a "production notes" section on your release page. Don't hide it - the listener community sniffs it out anyway.
Does this violate any music distributor terms?
No, for commercial-tier AI tools. Distributors like DistroKid, Amuse, CD Baby, and TuneCore allow releases produced with AI tools as long as you have rights to the AI output (which the Pro tiers of Suno and Udio grant). Free tier outputs from these platforms are generally not distributable.
Is using AI "cheating"?
Rhetorical question. Using a sampler was "cheating" in the 80s. Using plugins was "cheating" in the 2000s. Using AI in 2026 is more tools in the chain. The music still has to be good. No tool saves bad taste.
The short version
Suno + Logic Pro 12 is a legitimate hybrid workflow for producers. It saves roughly 50% on time-to-first-draft by solving the "blank canvas" problem. It doesn't replace craft - every audible element in my experiment was still human-produced. Suno contributed structure, not sound.
Use AI where it helps (ideation, reference, sketching). Keep humans where they matter (creative decisions, vocals, final mix). This is the shape of production workflows going forward. Better to learn it now than fight the current.
