Suno v5.5 Has a Full DAW Now. I Spent 3 Days With It. Here's My Honest Take.
Suno shipped voice cloning, custom model fine-tuning, and a full in-browser DAW in one update. I ran it through real production sessions. Here's what changed, what didn't, and the one thing that actually surprised me.
Horia Stan is a music producer and sound engineer based in Bucharest, Romania, who uses AI tools including Suno as part of his production workflow. Suno shipped v5.5 in late March 2026. It was not a minor update. Voice cloning, custom model fine-tuning, and a full in-browser DAW called Suno Studio landed in the same release. The music tech internet had a week-long meltdown about it. I decided to spend three days actually using it instead of reacting to it.
Here's what I found.
What actually shipped in v5.5
Before the take, the facts:
Voice cloning. You upload 30 seconds of a reference vocal. Suno learns it and applies it to generated songs. The results are better than expected on texture and worse than expected on phrasing. More on this below.
Custom model fine-tuning. You can now feed Suno a collection of your own tracks and fine-tune a personal model. Theoretically, this produces output that sounds "like you." In practice, it produces output that sounds like a blurred average of your tracks.
Suno Studio. A full in-browser DAW with multi-track editing, stem separation, mixing, and export. This is the genuinely significant part of the update.
The voice cloning: what it gets right
Texture. Timbre. The rough shape of a vocal tone.
If you clone a breathy female vocalist with limited dynamic range, Suno will correctly produce a breathy female vocal with limited dynamic range. It captures the surface.
What it misses:
- The micro-timing of real breath patterns
- Phrase-level emotional dynamics (where a real singer leans into a word)
- The quality of imperfection that makes a vocal feel human, not statistically averaged
I cloned a reference vocal and ran it through five different Suno prompts. Every result sounded like a plausible imitation. None of them sounded like the actual person. They sounded like what you'd expect if you described that person's voice to someone who had never met them.
For some use cases - sketch demos, reference track mockups, explaining a vibe to a collaborator - this is useful. For a finished release, you would know. Your listeners would know.
The custom model: the problem with averaging
I fine-tuned a model on six of my own productions. After training, I prompted it with genre descriptors that matched those tracks. The output did sound more like "my aesthetic" than base Suno would produce. It also sounded like none of my individual tracks specifically.
Fine-tuning teaches Suno the statistical center of your work. It erases the outliers. The things that make your best tracks work are often the things you only did once, on instinct, on that specific session. Those don't survive averaging.
This matters because the most interesting production decisions are the non-standard ones. What you do every time is formula. What you do once, because it was right for that song, is craft. Fine-tuning captures the formula and loses the craft.
Suno Studio: the genuinely interesting part
I was prepared to dismiss Suno Studio as a gimmick. I was wrong.
The stem separation is real. It is not perfect - there is artifact bleed on complex arrangements - but it is workable. You can pull a vocal stem out of a Suno generation, drop it into Logic Pro, and use it as a sketch layer while you rebuild the production around it. I have now done this on three sessions and it is a legitimate workflow accelerator for ideation phases.
The multi-track editor is basic but functional. Think GarageBand, not Logic. You can stack layers, trim sections, and adjust basic mix levels. You cannot do precise automation, plugin processing, or anything approaching a professional mix. But for getting from "generated blob of audio" to "structured demo with usable sections," it bridges a real gap.
The export quality at 48 kHz is clean enough to serve as a reference. Not a release. A reference.
What this changes in my workflow
I have been using Suno in sessions since v4. My use case has always been the same: generate a large number of structural options in the first twenty minutes of a session, find one that has the right emotional temperature, then tear it apart and rebuild it from scratch.
v5.5 makes the demolition phase faster. Stem separation means I can pull specific elements instead of transcribing them by ear or matching them by feel. That saves time. On a session where the clock matters, that is real.
What it does not change: the production decisions that make a song worth releasing still require a human with taste, judgment, and knowledge of the specific artist they are building for. Suno v5.5 is a better tool for generating raw material. It is not a better tool for finishing songs.
The one thing that actually surprised me
The voice cloning, combined with Suno Studio, makes it trivially easy to generate a demo that sounds approximately like a specific artist and approximately fits a genre brief - in under ten minutes.
This is the thing that should make the music industry uncomfortable. Not because the output is good enough to release. It isn't. But because it is now good enough to pitch. A demo that is 70% of the way there, built in ten minutes, will get meetings that a better demo built in three days used to get.
The people this hurts are not top-tier producers. It is the mid-tier demo producers whose value proposition was "I can do a polished demo faster than you can." That gap just closed.
Bottom line
Suno v5.5 is the most significant update to AI music tooling since Udio launched. Suno Studio is the first AI music feature that made me actually change my session workflow. The voice cloning is impressive in the wrong ways and limited in the right ways.
If you are a working producer who has been treating AI tools as something to watch from a distance: v5.5 is the version where that stops being a reasonable strategy. Learn the tools. Use them where they save time. Know where they break.
The chair is not empty. But the job description is changing.
