How Much Does It Cost to Mix and Master an EP or Album in 2026?

What it costs to mix and master an EP or album in 2026: per-song math, real mastering rate cards, multi-song discounts, hidden extras and how to budget.

Horia Stan is a music producer and sound engineer at The One Records in Bucharest, Romania, who mixes and masters records for artists worldwide, remotely and in writing.

Mixing and mastering an EP or album is priced per song in almost every case, so the budget is mostly song count times the per-song rate. A 5-song EP typically runs from a few hundred dollars with budget freelancers to several thousand with established engineers. Mastering is where multi-song discounts actually show up. Mixing rarely gets much cheaper per song.

Quick answer

  • Budget formula: (mixing rate + mastering rate) x number of songs, plus extras like instrumentals, DDP or vinyl masters.
  • 5-song EP: roughly $250-750 at budget tier, $750-2,500 mid-tier, $2,500+ with credited engineers.
  • 10-song album: roughly $500-1,500 budget, $1,500-5,000 mid-tier, $5,000+ high-end.
  • Where you save: mastering several songs at once, and booking one engineer for the whole project. Not by cutting corners on the mix.

Why an EP is priced per song

A mix is a separate job for every song. A 4-minute track with 60 stems and stacked vocals takes the same work whether it is a single or track 3 of an EP. That is why most mixing engineers quote per song and stop there.

Mastering is different. Once the engineer has the chain and the reference for track 1, tracks 2 to 10 go faster. That is where discounts come from. Mastering an EP also adds work a single does not need: matching loudness and tone across songs, setting gaps and fades, and making the sequence sound like one record.

So expect a flat or almost flat per-song mixing rate, and a falling per-song mastering rate.

What a full EP or album costs: tier by tier

The per-song ranges below come from Paradise Recording's 2026 pricing guide, which lists combined mix and master per song at $50-150 for budget freelancers, $150-500 for mid-tier professionals and $500-2,000+ for credited engineers. I multiplied them out. It is arithmetic, not a quote.

TierPer song (mix + master)4-song EP6-song EP10-song album
AI mastering only, no mix$5-40$20-160$30-240$50-400
Budget freelance$50-150$200-600$300-900$500-1,500
Mid-tier professional$150-500$600-2,000$900-3,000$1,500-5,000
High-end, credited$500-2,000+$2,000-8,000+$3,000-12,000+$5,000-20,000+

The same guide says many engineers take 10-20% off when you book both mixing and mastering with them. If you are hiring one person for the whole project, ask. That bundle discount usually beats any per-song EP discount on the mixing side.

For a deeper look at what each tier actually includes per song, I broke it down in how much mixing and mastering costs in 2026.

Mastering an EP: real rate cards

Mastering prices are public more often than mixing prices, so here are real published rates. I picked a range from AI to a world-famous room.

ServiceSingle song5-song EP10-song albumSource
LANDR (AI)$10$50$100LANDR
Chase Park Transduction$100$400$775rates
Stockholm Mastering1,300 SEK4,750 SEK9,500 SEKrates
Abbey Road Online, Standard120 โ‚ฌ600 โ‚ฌ1,200 โ‚ฌAbbey Road

How those totals work:

  • Chase Park charges $100 for the first song and $75 for each additional song. Project rates are available by email, so a full album may come in lower.
  • Stockholm Mastering charges 1,300 SEK for one song and 950 SEK per song for two or more, excluding VAT. Revisions are listed as free, within reason.
  • Abbey Road Online lists 120 โ‚ฌ per track for Standard, 180 โ‚ฌ for Enhanced with your choice of engineer, and 300 โ‚ฌ for Deluxe. The page gives no EP price, just a contact form.
  • LANDR charges $10 per track without a subscription. It can master a batch of tracks with the same settings. That does consistency in a mechanical way, not by ear.

Notice the pattern. Human mastering for a 5-song EP at an established independent room lands around $400-700. If an AI master is enough for demos, read AI mastering vs a human engineer before you decide it is enough for the release.

TIP
Get all the songs mastered by the same engineer in the same project. Mastering singles with three different people and calling it an EP is the most common reason indie EPs sound like a playlist instead of a record.

The extras that change the total

The per-song rate is never the whole bill. These are the lines that show up on EP and album invoices.

ExtraTypical published costWhen you need it
Instrumental or alternate mixes$20 per song at Chase Park, if sent with the projectSync, live shows, TV versions, clean edits
Stem mastering$125 per song at Chase ParkWhen the stereo mix has problems the mix engineer cannot fix
DDP image for CD1,000 SEK at Stockholm MasteringOnly if you are pressing CDs
Vinyl premaster60 SEK per minute at Stockholm MasteringOnly if you are cutting vinyl
Extra revision rounds$50-200 per round, per Paradise RecordingAfter the included rounds run out
Rush delivery25-50% more, per the same guideHard release dates you set too late
Vocal tuning and editingOften billed separatelyUnedited vocals, many doubles and harmonies

Two of these quietly blow up EP budgets.

Versions. Six songs times instrumental, a cappella and clean versions is 18 extra files. Decide what you need before the mix starts, not after.

Vocal editing. If your lead vocal is raw, the tuning and timing work can cost as much as the mix. I covered the numbers in how much vocal tuning costs. And if you are unsure whether you even need stem mastering, stem vs stereo mastering answers it.

Why one engineer for the whole EP is worth it

You can mix song 1 with one engineer, song 2 with another and save a bit on each. I would not. Each mix engineer brings a different low end, a different vocal level and a different sense of space. Mastering can make them match in loudness. It cannot make them sound like the same record.

This is the part of the job I care most about. When I take on an EP, the same person mixes and masters every song, against the same references. That keeps the vocal treatment and the low end consistent from track 1 to the last track. I work remotely and fully async: you send files, references and notes in writing, and I send back mixes. Two standard revision rounds are included on every project, and extra rounds are not counted when the feedback is fair. If that is the kind of finish your EP needs, the details are on the mixing and mastering page.

My projects start at โ‚ฌ500 per song. The final price depends on scope: stem count, how much vocal editing is needed and which versions you want. Average turnaround is 2-3 days per song, and it depends on genre, complexity and the vocal takes. Plan the EP schedule by song count. If you want to see how timelines stack up across a project, read how long it takes to mix and master a song.

How to budget an EP without wasting money

Count what you are actually paying for

Before asking anyone for a quote, write down:

  1. Number of songs and average length.
  2. Number of stems per song, roughly.
  3. Whether vocals are already tuned and comped.
  4. Which versions you need: main, instrumental, clean, a cappella.
  5. Formats: streaming only, or CD and vinyl too.
  6. Your release date.

Send that list with every quote request. Quotes become comparable, and you stop getting surprise line items.

Spend where the ear notices

If money is tight, spend it on the mix of the songs you will push hardest. Then put everything through mastering with one engineer so the EP still holds together. A great mix with decent mastering beats a rushed mix with an expensive master every time.

Prepare the files properly

Messy stems cost hours, and hours cost money. Name, consolidate and export everything from bar 1 at the session sample rate. My stem prep checklist covers the full list.

Ask the right questions before paying

Ask how many revisions are included per song, whether alternate versions cost extra, and whether the EP gets a project rate. I keep a longer list in 12 questions to ask a mixing engineer.

When to do it yourself and when to hand it off

Doing it yourself is fine when the EP is a demo, a pitch to labels or a test of new material. It is also fine when you have a treated room and a track record of mixes that translate. In that case, pay only for mastering with one human engineer and you get most of the benefit for a fraction of the cost.

Hand it off when the EP is the release you are building a year around. Hand it off when the vocal is the selling point and needs real editing, or when the songs come from different sessions and need to sound like one body of work. That is where a dedicated mix and master pays for itself.

If you are there, see mixing and mastering for how I work, or send your song count, references and deadline through the request form. If the songs are not finished yet and you need production first, start at music production.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to mix and master a 5-song EP?

Using published 2026 per-song ranges, a 5-song EP costs roughly $250-750 with budget freelancers, $750-2,500 with mid-tier professionals and $2,500 or more with credited engineers. Extras like instrumentals, vocal editing, DDP or vinyl masters, extra revisions and rush delivery are added on top. Many engineers give 10-20% off when you book both mixing and mastering with them.

Is mastering an album cheaper per song than mastering a single?

Usually yes. Many mastering engineers charge less for each additional song because the chain and references carry over. Chase Park Transduction, for example, charges $100 for the first song and $75 for each extra song. Stockholm Mastering charges 1,300 SEK for one song and 950 SEK per song for two or more. Ask for a project rate on anything over five songs.

Do mixing engineers give discounts for EPs?

Some do, but mixing discounts are smaller than mastering discounts because every mix is a separate job with its own stems and vocals. The more common saving is a bundle discount for booking mixing and mastering with the same engineer, which Paradise Recording puts at 10-20%. Always ask whether the EP qualifies for a project rate.

Should the same engineer master every song on my EP?

Yes. One mastering engineer working on the whole project can match loudness, tone, gaps and sequencing so the EP sounds like one record. Mastering songs separately with different engineers often leaves level jumps and tonal shifts between tracks that listeners notice on a straight play-through.

Is AI mastering good enough for an EP?

For demos and quick previews, AI mastering at around $10 per track is fine. For a release, it applies settings without listening to the EP as a whole, so it cannot judge sequencing, fix problems in the mix or make a creative call between songs. If the EP matters to you, a human mastering engineer is worth the difference.

What hidden costs should I budget for when mixing an album?

The usual ones are alternate versions like instrumentals and clean edits, vocal tuning and editing, extra revision rounds beyond the included ones, rush fees of 25-50%, and physical-format masters like DDP for CD or vinyl premasters. Listing your versions, formats and deadline before requesting quotes keeps these from appearing later.
